Assam is where most journeys into the Northeast begin — and where many travellers realise they should have allowed more time. It's the natural gateway: Guwahati connects the region to the rest of India, and from there the Brahmaputra valley opens out into grassland national parks, river islands, and tea country.
Our Assam trips centre on three experiences: jeep safaris across Kaziranga's ranges, a ferry crossing to Majuli — one of the world's largest river islands, with its working satras, mask-making workshops, and Mishing villages — and a slow afternoon walking a Jorhat tea estate, tasting where the leaf is actually made. Assam also combines naturally with Meghalaya or Arunachal on a longer Northeast itinerary.
Why visit
Kaziranga National Park — home of the one-horned rhinoceros, with morning and afternoon safaris across distinctly different ranges.
Majuli Island — living satra monastic culture, traditional mask-making, and Mishing village life on the Brahmaputra.
Jorhat's tea estates — factory visits, tastings, and estate walks in the heart of Assam tea country.
The easiest first taste of the Northeast — good roads, no permits for Indian citizens, and a natural pairing with Meghalaya or Arunachal.

When to go
Nov – Apr · Safari season
Kaziranga is open, the weather is at its most comfortable, and river crossings to Majuli run reliably.
May – Oct · Park closed
Kaziranga closes for the monsoon and the Brahmaputra runs high — plan a wildlife-focused Assam trip outside these months.
